Techniques of the Month #1
In this section I will try to try to present two or more techniques or drills each month so check often. These will be from various sources ranging from mano mano to stick to knives or combinations. This page will concentrate mainly on the Filipino Martial Arts but there will be elements from other style as to cover a broader audience.Going with the Flow
This first drill I will use the concept of palis - palis. This is where you basically go with the flow of an attack or a blocking movement and not resist. For these examples we will be utilizing the empty hand. But of course weapons can also be used.
1. Opponents assume any lead stance. Opponent A right straight punch. Opponent B then blocks with left hand using inside or outside block. Opponent A then just goes with the force of the block and checks the hand off either across or downward. Play with the drill by mixing different combinations. 2. This drill is exactly the same as the first except now you are using the high and low blocks. Again play with different hand combinations.
When you get the hang of this simple drills then add a counter strike. As soon as you check the hand off add any applicable hand strikes, single or multiples, then use any applicable kicks. Again take it one higher and do combinations. Those who are familiar with this type of drill will see where this will lead to. The Use of Tapi or Checks The use of tapis or checks is very important. In can be used to neutraliize an attacking limb or against grabs. This section we will cover grabs on the limbs whether it be on the wrists or the arms.
1. Opponent A grabs B`s wrist. B neutralize by checking A`s hand off. Again play by cross arm grabbing or parallel grabs on any part of the arm then add hand strikes or kicks or combination of both. 2. Opponent A grabs B`s wrist and apply an outside wrist turn. As soon as the lock is applied B has to react immediately and check the hand off or counter lock A.
3. Do the same as #2 but apply an inside wrist turn. B again must react quickly to check the hand off.
These drills written here are by no means a replacement for an actual instructor who will actually show you the finer details. Seek one out. In the mean time train hard, be patience, be consistence and keep an open mind.
